My dad phoned today. He wants to look after Lauren and offered to pay for us to go skiing today. Since it's March break this week we said we'd decided against skiing but will go to lunch and a movie. In all honesty....... I'd would love to go skiing but don't want my dad to look after her that long and us be that far away.
I thought I'd write this now instead of after it happens since I guess this worry is all part of being a parent. Here's the thing. I trust a stranger to look after Lauren more then my own father. Dan agrees with this statement and gave his input as to why. We trust a stranger to do as we ask a lot more then we trust my dad. He is spot on. I could go on and on with examples but I'll just leave it at this. Numerous times I've specifically asked him not to do something and he says ok or will try to argue with me that really it's ok if he does. Most of the time he will then try to do what I've asked him not to. I say try because he'll actually do this maybe 10 minutes after our initial conversation right in front of me and I'll stop him and tell him off and we'll argue again about why it's not a big deal if he does.
I do NOT care if YOU think something will be ok. I'M the PARENT, you are the GRANDPARENT. Please, please, PLEASE respect my decisions on how I want raise MY DAUGHTER!
One of the big issues we've been dealing with since Lauren was a few months old is food. I want to slowly introduce food to Lauren. I want to do so safely and within most guidelines. The reason for this is that Lauren seems to have many skin sensitivities and I fear this will also be the case with food. The past month Lauren has broken out in a rash from baby eczema cream and I recently bought a hazelwood necklace to try to help with the eczema but it only lasted a few hours before she had a reaction to the clasp. Wether these guidelines actually effect allergies or not I'm choosing to follow them on the chance they do. No harm will come from Lauren waiting until she's 9 months to have yogurt or a year to drink cow's milk. Lauren will be perfectly fine waiting a few days between new introductions of food. I just used examples of yogurt and milk, an example of what I'm talking about with my dad would be how in October he tried to give her a piece of his cake. She wasn't even 3 months old and he tried to give her chocolate cake! This is what I'm up against.
My other stress with this is that he wants to have her for longer. He wants a whole day with her. I get that he loves her and wants to spend as much time as possible with her but he seems to want to go out and do things with her. I haven't asked details because I tried to brush it off but I think he expects me to leave him our car with the carseat and take his. WHY? Why can't he spend a few hours at our place with her? Want to go the park? It's only a 10 minute walk. Want to go to the mall or grocery store? It's a 10 minute walk. He thinks he's a great driver but in all honesty he's not. He's way too easily distracted and I can only imagine what he'd be like with Lauren in the car. His driving was part of the reason my sister and him didn't talk for a few years. They went on a road trip together, which was a terrible idea to begin with considering they hadn't spent more then 30 hours together since she was 5. From what my sister says most of the arguments were about his driving. He was playing with the gps or his laptop or radio more then paying attention to driving (also she says he wouldn't stop to see wildlife but that isn't an issue with me at the moment!) Dan and I have followed him before and the number of times he goes over into another lane is too often for me to feel any comfort having Lauren in the car with him. Also, Lauren doesn't enjoy being in the car. All she wants to do lately is stand. She hates sitting and being stuck in her seat and will protest at the sight of her jacket in my hand.
I really do love my dad and I really do want him to spend time with Lauren. I just wish I could trust his judgement and respect for our parenting more. We've decided to let him watch Lauren some days when I return to work. I've put a condition on this that the moment he suspects his wife is off her meds (she's a paranoid schizophrenic) she's no longer allowed around Lauren. Problem is we don't actually trust my dad's judgement on when she is off her meds. We suspected months before my Dad did the last time she was off her meds when Lauren was born but we figured we'd give it a try and the moment we fear for Lauren she and potentially he will no longer be allowed alone with her. I hate that I even have to worry about this but he's changed the past few years too. He's gone a little strange to the point where Dan and I joke that she's putting something in his food. I really hope he's ok. I worry about him too.
Ok rant over. Hopefully now that I've gotten it out I'll be able to get some sleep. An update from my last post about the weight loss........I've had a cold and haven't been feeling or sleeping well so I put the 30 day shred on hold after day 2 :) 155 just seems to be the weight I can stay at without having to diet or exercise and although it's not my ideal weight I am happy with it.

Weight and body changes
I thought I'd do an update on how my body has changed. We started our pregnancy journey over 2 years ago and my body has definitely changed. My weight the past 10 years has always fluctuated between 150-160lbs depending on my eating and exercising habits, in other words I'd start exercising when my weight started creeping up to 160. Here's my weight story in pictures:
Summer 2009
11 weeks pregnant with Hailey (Feb 2010)
Both taken 27th April 2010 before leaving for the hospital (185lbs)
Oct. 2010, month I became pregnant with Lauren (165lbs)
Lauren's due date, 22 July 2011 (215lbs)
Taken Friday
Looking at that last picture I'm quite happy with the progress. Not a pretty stomach and will not be wearing a bikini any time soon, or likely ever again. I'm now at 155lbs and feel like I've plateaued. Now that I'm back to my pre pregnancy weight and have reached that goal my motivation has decreased so Thursday I started the 30 day shred. Hoping to do it every day this month. Will update the progress next month.

7 months
I'm starting to realize Lauren's no longer my little baby.
Banana! Even with banana she'll play but not put in her mouth
Getting ready for bed. Still swaddling her so she can't itch her chin
Playing with Dad
Walking. Notice the feet?
Hated being in the park swing!
Playing with Nana
-She sits unaided and now rarely falls over, stands with support and LOVES walking around (with help of course.) I'm slightly concerned with her feet though. I think she's bow legged. Maybe this is just a learning thing because I've noticed the left side getting straighter but the right stays the same. I'll try to remember to bring this up at our next appointment in 2 months.
-She's getting close to crawling. She lifts her legs and bum up but can't figure out how to get her chest up at the same time. I think she's doing amazingly well with the crawling process considering she hates tummy time and hasn't gotten nearly as much as she should've. I don't think I mentioned last time but the doctor told me at her 6 month appointment to keep doing the tummy time because she was starting to get a flat head. Well that's near impossible considering she can roll over when she wants and unless we distract her that's exactly what she does. I'm hoping it'll be ok now because she sits or stands most of the day unless she's sleeping. I've also switched the strollers too so she no longer sits in the car seat when we go for walks. I'm hoping since she's able to lift her head and look around it'll help a little too.
-We're still struggling with trying to find foods Lauren likes. The list is still very short: Apples, Bananas. We tried butternut squash yesterday and she ate half the container so I'm hoping this will be added to the list. She didn't mind sweet potato either so I've got some more to make up and will hopefully be up to 4 fruits and veg she likes. She also tried some chicken and mince this week (she liked neither!) I've been trying to let her feel the food and she enjoys playing with it but it never goes in her mouth. I find this very strange because everything she touches goes into her mouth.....except food!
-We're also still struggling with her eczema. It had gotten better using the Vaseline base but it's now flared up again. The hazel wood necklace I ordered online shipped yesterday so hopefully this'll help. I should add that I don't believe in the "healing" of the necklace but am at a lose of what to do so am willing to try anything at this point. *I've just received a call that Lauren has an appointment with a dermatologist early next month!*
-She's all over the place in clothing sizes. Anywhere from 3-6 month put to 12 month depending on the brand.
It was my Grandmother's 90th birthday this month so we had a great big party for her. This meant that we also got to see my cousin's baby who was born 3 weeks ahead of Lauren. Man is there a big difference. She was held 90% of the time so she can't even sit up unaided yet. I don't know if I could handle still having a baby that needed to be held all the time. I'm enjoying the freedom of Lauren happily playing on the floor too much.
Here's some pics for the month:

The weather's starting to turn nice so more walks in the park!

6 months
Weight: 19.4lbs
Height: (I'll have to check later!)
My baby's 6 months old! Wow the time has flown by. These past few months have been really great watching Lauren learn and explore. When she was a newborn she was very relaxed and easy going then there was a few months that she cried a lot. In hind site I think she was a bit colic. I also think she was very frustrated with not being able to move around. Now that she's more mobile she's loving life. She's the happiest little girl and has started to sit on her own and play on the floor which means I'm able to get more housework done. She's back to being a very laid back baby. This week was filled with appointments. Monday she saw the optometrist. It's suggested they see them around 6 months to make sure there's no congenital defects and make sure things are progressing well. I was expecting to pay for this visit and then file to get reimbursed through our extended health but was pleasantly surprised to find that it's covered. Lauren did so well that the optometrist was able to see all the way to her optic nerve in both eyes which she says is very rare for babies to allow them to do. No defects (thankfully) but she did mention that Lauren has a slight astigmatism. That this stage it's very minor and likely won't change but she'll have to go for yearly checks just to make sure it doesn't. The way I see it is that worst that'll happen is she'll need glasses (which is to be expected at some point since I need them and Dan needs them for night driving.) Next was her 6 month check up with our doctor. Lauren's eczema has gotten pretty bad so we were given a steroid cream to use. So far it's helped with the inflammation but it's not really clearing it up. Hopefully it'll start to work better soon or we'll be back in later this week. Again the doctor was surprised at how calm Lauren was at the appointment. She said after listening to Lauren's heart that she has very strong valves (which made me feel good!) Lauren let her look inside her mouth with the tongue depressor and wasn't bothered with any of the poking and prodding. Wednesday was her 6 month shots. There's the start of a whooping cough outbreak in the town next to us (they've had over 100 reported cases since December) so I wanted to make sure we were on time with the immunization since we often visit our friends (who don't immunize) that live there. I don't really want to get into the whole immunization debate but with the outbreak, them having school aged children and Lauren not being fully immunized yet I've been avoiding visiting them a bit. A coworker's 10 month old had it and she was telling me how horrible it was.
Here's a list of Lauren's achievements this past month:
-She's started eating fruits and vegetables! So far she's had spaghetti squash (hates it), sweet potato (indifferent), apple (LOVES!), banana (likes) and carrot (not too sure about it yet since it's only day 2.) She gets rice cereal in the morning which she really likes and puree for dinner.
-Pulls herself up from sitting on my lap
-I've discovered she likes wearing hats (which I've started taking full advantage of)
-Had her first outing in the snow
- First trip to the US (to pick up Grandma and Grandpa)
- rolling back and forth
-wants to touch EVERYTHING!
- she's started taking steps while standing
- sits unaided really well now (though I still don't trust her on hard surfaces)
- She's got a tiny bud on her upper gum!
Now for the pictures :)
Hat her great grandma in Australia knitted for her
Wearing Grandpa's hat
She hardly sits anymore!

visitors
Dan's parents have been out for nearly 2 weeks. It's gone surprisingly well. I was a little depressed about a week before they arrived and even e-mailed a girl I met from the perinatal loss group because I felt like I needed to tell what was on my mind to someone who didn't know any of the people involved. I will post that e-mail at the end. There's still a lot of resentment left over from Hailey's pregnancy. I know I need to let this go. It's not just with Dan's parents but also Dan himself. We struggled for months with our relationship. Most of the time I've moved on but sometimes it still eats away at me.
Back to the visit. We've been very busy. We went on a little ski holiday with them to Sun Peaks and we took turns watching Lauren and skiing. It was a little bittersweet. Dan and I LOVE being outdoors and skiing and while we were there I kept going back to how this never would've happened with Hailey. The altitude would've been too high for sufficient oxygen levels. The rest of the visit has been uneventful. We've spent a lot of time at home playing since it was really cold outside. The weather's finally changed and we went for a nice long walk today. Tomorrow we drive them to the airport and while it's been nice having them visit it'll be nice to be on our own again.
Here's the e-mail, I've let out parts that talk about her story and what she's been through:

Here's the e-mail, I've let out parts that talk about her story and what she's been through:
I've been feeling a lot of guilt lately. I can't stop thinking of Hailey, even my dreams are of her. I can't remember if I told you but Dan and I had different opinions on what to do when we found out she was sick. When they went over the options after the first echo ending the pregnancy went in one ear and out the other because to me it wasn't an option. When we got home I was shocked when Dan turned to me and said that's what he wanted to do because it had never crossed my mind. We struggled with what to do and it started off with me saying there's no way I could do it and Dan saying telling me that it was my choice since it was my body and then somewhere there was a switch and I felt I was just getting pushed from different sides. When we told our families everyone on my side said "whatever you decide we support you 100%" no one wanted to sway us either way. Dan's family had the opposite approach. They felt they should give their opinions and Dan's dad and I went back and forth with e-mails ( I don't even remember what they were about but I do remember it wasn't happy or encouraging ones) and I still feel a little hurt by Dan for not sticking up for me. There were times where I begged him to ask his Dad to back off and his response was "just let him say what he wants to say and move on." Our families don't speak now because of this. One day I called my mum at work to pick me up cause I was getting pains and the doctor sent me to the hospital for monitoring and in the end everything was fine and put it down to stress. I'd been sending the e-mails to my mum and she sent them one asking them to please stop and reminding them that we hadn't decided what to do and the extra stress on top of what we were already going through wasn't good for the baby or me. They didn't appreciate this and apparently took her e-mail as mind your own business (as Dan recently told me they had put it.)
I wanted to let her fight and it kills me not knowing if we did the right thing. I was never very good with fully listening when the doctors where talking. I remember after the first echo we sat in this room with a bunch of doctors and they told us her diagnosis and when they went over the options all I could do was stare at the ultrasound pic I'd just received. Eventually I had to turn it over because it was too painful to look at her and discuss surgeries and heart transplants and how her life would never be normal. God that day still feels like yesterday if I think about it. The second echo was the same. I didn't really understand what they were talking about but Dan seemed to get it and ask questions. I remember Dan asking 2 questions at the second echo. He'd noticed there was blood flow into the left ventricle which wasn't there before which the doctors said didn't change anything since even if there was it was too small to function and Dan said he'd overheard them talking and was wondering what they were worried about with the aorta. I think I tuned out because I don't remember the answer and it wasn't until that night when Dan and I were discussing the day he explained that it meant they couldn't do transplant or surgeries. That's when I sided with him about ending it. I still wonder if this was true.
I also wonder if I have PND or if it's just normal to feel this way after everything we've been through. I still care for and look after Lauren but sometimes I look at her and think about how she's not Hailey and that she shouldn't really be here. I feel horrible for thinking that and I really do love her and am so thankful for her and that she's healthy. I don't know. Dan's parents are coming to visit next week so maybe that's why this is all coming back? I'm really hoping when they leave I'll start to feel better. I was thinking of going back to counselling but never actually call to make the appointment.
Sorry to put this on you. I've just been having a hard few months which sucks after so long of feeling better about everything. They say you have ups and downs and that you'll always have bad days. I've had a stretch of good days and am just waiting for them to start again. I'm also feeling bad for telling you all this because I don't want you to think that 2 years in you'll feel how you do now because it does get easier and days get better. I also don't want to sound ungrateful for Lauren either.
Hope you're doing ok. Hoping 2012 is a better year for you. My way of looking at 2011 was that it couldn't get much worse after the hell 2010 was.
I should add that the moment the e-mail was sent I felt better. Sometimes you really do just have to get it off your chest instead of bottling it up.

5 months
Today Lauren's 5 months old. Where has the time gone! I haven't weighed her much and I don't think she's put on weight or very little if she has. I think this month I'll just do an update on the things Lauren does.
-Lauren's currently on antibiotics. She has an infection in one of her toes. Not an ingrown toe nail but the doctor things her nail got snagged on something and made a small cut near the bottom of her nail which got infected. It was huge and disgusting before it was drained.
-She was also on a cream because her neck had quite a bad rash because she drools so much. It cleared it up but gave her huge painful pimples so we stopped using it. Unfortunately the rash is slowly coming back now.
- She's still not sleeping through the night again. She goes to sleep at 8 then wakes at 11, 4 and 6 or 7. We dropped a 2am feed when I noticed she wasn't actually eating much so I picked her up for a few days and rocked her back to sleep. Last night however I had to wake her up at 2:30 because she needed to have her antibiotics at 11. Of course she sleeps better when I rely on her waking up!
- She's picked up a new quirk. She sticks her tongue out when she's concentrating. She gets this from her dad.
- She loves to play. Now that she can grab and things she enjoys looking, picking up and touching EVERYTHING.
- She's started solids. We gave her rice cereal mixed with breast milk last week and have been giving it to her at her 6pm feed. We started off having it very runny so she sucked it off the spoon and slowly we're making it thicker. No, it doesn't help her sleep any better and yes it makes her poo so gross and smelly! We also haven't told anyone in the family she's on solids because for some reason people keep wanting to give her treats. She's only 5 months old!!!!!!!
- I put up the change pad on the change table (we'd just been using a cloth before) and now that she's higher up she lays there and kicks/ swings the blinds.
- She rolled over. She's only done this once on her own and I suspect it wasn't on her own either. I'd put her to bed one night and she started crying about 10 minutes later. When I came into the room she was on her tummy. She hooks her feet in between the slats to sleep on her side and I think she swung herself too far.
- She absolutely HATES being on her tummy. I think this is why she has no desire to roll over. We've practiced once because she was getting onto her side a lot. She realized it ended with her on her tummy and now no longer attempts to roll over.
- If you place her siting up she will stay siting unaided
- She had her first sleepover at Grandma's on New Years Eve and apparently was a very good girl (like grandma would think differently anyway!)
Dan and I decided to do operation red nose on New Years Eve this year. It was fun, but I think next year we'll do it on nights leading up to New Years. They had 22 teams of 3 on the road which is great but it ended up causing a lot of disorganization. I suspect it was too hard to keep track of that many cars. Here's a link to the website with more info about it : http://operationnezrouge.com. It was started in Quebec but is now done all over the country.
January's going to be a busy month for us. Daniel's parents arrive around the 12th and we're going on a skiing holiday with them. Then in February Dan and I are going away on our own for another skiing holiday. Lauren will stay at my mum's for the weekend. I'm really looking forward to getting to ski again since it's been 3 years. I was a little sad the past 2 years being pregnant and not aloud to ski. No idea if I'll be any good again!
Now for the pics of Lauren this month. We bought a new camera during a boxing day sale and I absolutely love it :
Playing with the Christmas tree
Everything goes in the mouth
Trying food
Sitting nicely for mum
Happy after a nap
Trying to sit up in her chair (notice the tongue)
Reading books with Dad on Christmas
Playing with her new toy

4 months
weight : 17.8 lbs
height : 65 cm
I've lost nearly all of my Lauren pregnancy weight! I have 5 more pounds to go (161) and 10 to be at my pre Hailey pregnancy weight (156) and to be honest another 21 to go to be at my ideal weight (145!) I bought a 3 month pass to my local recreation centre and have been going to classes a 3-5 times a week. I go to 2 cycle fit classes a week (which I really enjoy) and try to do 2-3 stroller stride classes. The stroller stride is harder to get motivated to go to because it's in the morning and all depends on how well Lauren slept.
Enough about me though. Lauren's doing great. Her sleeping habits could be better though. She was sleeping through the night for a few weeks but has now started getting up every 3 hours. This wouldn't be so bad if she'd go right back to sleep afterwards but the past week she's been staying awake for a few hours which is really hard on me. Thankfully last night she was tired enough to go back to sleep. She's a little drooler at the moment and will soak through a within a few hours. She's also got a terrible diaper rash that won't go away no matter what we do. I've had to switch to disposables so I can use zinc based cream and sometimes it'll start to look better but has yet to go away after a week and a half. These combined with her chewing on her fingers leads me to believe she's teething. Hopefully the tooth will cut through soon so we can go back to cloth. I absolutely hate using the disposables, not to mention how expensive they are!
She's recently started to grab for things. She babbles whenever she feels like it and I can guarantee if you try to prompt her to talk she will refuse. Here's a few pics taken over the last month.
